Spaceport Factory

Eldoran War Industry • The Furnace with a Star Inside • First of Three Targets

Overview

The Spaceport Factory is an Eldoran factory at the spaceport of the capital, Eldoran, where an assembly line turns raw materials into finished spacecraft components. At the far end of the line sits its furnace: a power core held in containment and stasis magic that turned out to hold a miniature sun. George named the factory as one of the Twilight Company's three sabotage targets in Session 58.

In Session 63, rather than simply blow the furnace, Bru shrank the sun and stole it; it now sits in Scarlet's Leomund's Secret Chest. The party's bombs at the factory went off with the other two targets that same day. What remains of the factory has not been described.

The Factory

  • The floor — An assembly line running from raw materials to finished spacecraft parts, with a cafeteria for the floor crew (Session 59).
  • The furnace — At the far end of the line, behind a magically warded door opened by the overseer's key. It is a contained power plant: containment and stasis magic inside, a layer of insulation outside (Session 60). Inside is a sphere of raw energy about the size of a school bus — a miniature sun (Session 63).
  • The overseer's office — A spherical mobile office that glides along tracks across the factory ceiling, with a bank of security monitors trained on the furnace. Its overseer is a heavyset, red-haired woman who carries the key (Session 59).
  • The corner office — An office off an exit throughway near the furnace, used by the factory's management. Captain Steel was seen meeting an administrator beside it (Session 60) and was in it during the heist (Session 63).

The Workers

Elspeth, working the floor in disguise, befriended the factory workers — Cassandra, Gracie and others — and agreed to go to Cassandra's lakeside birthday party (Session 60). The party overheard that the factory would close for a 24-hour retooling and that management planned to fire the entire floor crew as unsuited to the new production line; the workers confirmed the layoffs at her party (Session 62). The party struck on the day of the shutdown, with only a skeleton crew on the floor.

The Heist

Scouting (Sessions 59–60). The party's inside man, the actor Bon Bonnery, spoke in code at the Hairy Monkey of a key that must be found inside and a furnace that would "ignite this city." Silas, Bru and Olivia got into the factory disguised as its lunch delivery, and Silas climbed the walls and leapt onto the overseer's gliding office; the session ended with him inside it and the overseer alerted (Session 59). With the overseer's keys taken, the party confirmed the furnace was a power core, and agreed all three targets had to go up at once (Session 60).

Stealing the sun (Session 63). Bru, as a Colonel Sanders–styled "entropy mechanic," and Olivia, as a "smelter," joined the skeleton crew after Olivia talked the foreman into accepting them as reinforcements. Bru flew to the top of the sun on winged boots and planted the internal bomb, then cast Reduce on the sun, shrank it to about two feet across and hid it in a Rope Trick pocket. He told the foreman and a coworker named Tuni that it had got really big, then really small, and was gone; the foreman called it a collapse. Captain Steel told them to go away through his office door, then came out, berated Olivia, tore the furnace door open one-handed, demanded to know what had happened to the furnace, and flew off. He spotted Bru outside a split second after Bru saw him, and Bru escaped with Misty Step. Meanwhile Olivia planted the casing bomb on top of the furnace and talked a thief who was already casing the factory into leaving quietly. Scarlet sealed the stolen sun in her Leomund's Secret Chest.
