Greyport
Main City of the Free Republic • City of the Steve Squad • Where Luna Fell
Overview
Greyport is an overcast port city on the east side of the continent and the main city of the Free Republic — the "free states," mostly islands in the shattered oceans, that still resist the Eldoran Empire. It is the last human city in the region the Empire has not taken, and until recently most of its people assumed they would be absorbed eventually.
Greyport is where Silas and Bru's old crew was massacred and where Elspeth's racing career was ended by a frame-up, both shown in flashback interludes. The party arrived in Session 38 and made the city their base through Session 54: they rebound the dragon orb at the crash site offshore, restored the moon goddess Luna, and — with Leliana's concert in Session 53 — hung a new moon in the sky over the city. By the time the party left for the Eldoran capital, people in Greyport were talking openly about resisting the Empire.
The City
- Setting: Grey, overcast skies most of the year; a river runs through the city, which has outgrown its medieval walls and now has skyscrapers (Session 38).
- Legacy of the Steve Squad: Greyport honors the Steve Squad, the heroes of roughly two hundred years ago. Statues of them — with Steve the dire wolf, disproportionately large, in sunglasses at the center — stand over the main city gate (Session 38).
- Style: Gentrified around its university and waterfront, with an aesthetic the DM called "disco punk" (Session 38); the older dock district beyond the trendy cafes is blue-collar (Session 44).
Landmarks
- Greyport Zoo — Founded by the Steve Squad's Dane as a small petting zoo and now a vast attraction, with a bronze statue of Dane and Steve at the gate, an owlbear exhibit and Fufu the chimera (Sessions 38, 43). Victor's lab lies in the sewers beneath the chimera enclosure, and beyond it a headquarters of the Twilight Company; the Company's front building near the zoo operates as "Richard Jones Investments" (Sessions 43, 47). The Company lent the party a three-story brownstone safe house across the drive from the zoo.
- The Dragon's Hide — An inn with an adult dragon skeleton on its roof, headquarters of the Order of St. George, with the Order's working rooms in the basement (Session 39).
- Caspian Center — A religious campus dedicated to the Winter King, named for the Steve Squad's Caspian, with a chapel, a humanities center and a pizza place on the quad (Session 38). Thugs set it on fire in Session 44; Iro put the fire out with a thunderstorm.
- Fluke's Workshop — Iro's free, open crafting workshop in the old dock district, keeping his father Fluke's steamboat, the Iron Maiden, and a memorial wall to the Steve Squad. Scarlet's pocket village was completed in its catalytic chamber (Sessions 44–45).
- Gaines Bruery, Bakery and Bankery — Jasper's business. Its main-street bakery exploded as the party arrived (Session 39); the port-side brewery sits beside an old church and an orphanage, which Jasper runs (Sessions 47–48). It hosted the benefit concert of Session 53.
- The Cog & Steam — The Sisyphus Circle's favorite bar, overlooking the zoo (Interlude XIII); now held by the Iron Claws (Session 53).
- Greyport Speedway — Scene of the race where Elspeth was framed (Interludes XIV–XV).
- The Checkered Rest — A restaurant near Jasper's bakery, owned by Dolly (Session 48).
- Denlin's orphanage — A converted factory where Denlin had children refine violescence and was transforming children in vats into copies of Elspeth (Sessions 48–50).
- Razlemania arena — A wrestling arena on its own island off the coast (Session 51).
- The Lenny T Museum — An old opera house being renovated as a performance venue and memorial to a famous bard (Session 38).
Luna Trench
Just off Greyport's coast lies the site where Luna fell when the Eldoran weapon struck her: a ring in the sea where the water simply ends, with a dry ocean floor some 300 feet below and Luna's 400-foot glowing skeleton lying across it. The site is an ancient holy place — a "rift site" to the Aquans who once lived there, a "place of balancing" to the dwarves — that softened Luna's landing (Sessions 40–41). The party performed the rebinding ritual on the dragon orb beside her skull in Session 41, and in Session 52 drove off an Eldoran operation chaining her remains, packing her chest with stolen violescence until she returned in the flesh. The party named the site "Luna Trench" (Session 52).
Greyport and the Party's Pasts
Silas and Bru. Years ago their crew, the Sisyphus Circle, robbed the Pandora gang's vault in Greyport of the dragon orb for a client who turned out to be Helja Ungar. At the drop in Blackwell Memorial Park she had the crew gunned down; Silas and Bru escaped through the storm drains with the orb (Interlude XIII). One crew member, Sander, survived and was working at Jasper's bakery when the party arrived (Session 39). The Iron Claws still hold the crew's old neighborhood (Session 40), and Helja's mother has taken back the boss's seat since Helja's death (Session 53).
Elspeth. At the Greyport Speedway finale, rival racers conspired to disgrace her on the orders of the circuit board, and her brother Zachary switched her registered racing crystal for an unregistered one, ending her twenty-year career (Interludes XIV–XV). Back in Greyport she found Belspeth Booper racing under a copy of her name for the orphanage owner Denlin, exposed his child-labor violescence operation, punched Zachary at his garage, and won Denlin's race in Denlin's own car (Sessions 45–50).
