Pocket Village

The Stellaro • A Village Between Dimensions • Luna's Refuge

Overview

The pocket village — the project the table also called the Stellaro — is a small dimension the party built over much of the campaign. It began as a set of schematics Bru and Elspeth worked on in downtime, was taken up by the dimensional scientist Scarlet, and was finally opened at Iro's workshop in Greyport in Session 45. Inside, the land reshapes itself around the imagination of whoever enters.

In Session 46 it survived an attack by void beings and stabilized into a permanent dimension of its own, and Luna, the fallen moon goddess, first spoke and appeared again there. Since Session 47 it folds down into a capsule that Scarlet carries in her pocket. The party uses it to rest, to store vehicles and loot, and to reach the Lotus Casino through a door inside it.

Building the Village

  • The schematics (Sessions 24–25). The pocket village was one of the advanced projects the party worked on during downtime. Bru and Elspeth completed a milestone in Session 25, and the party persuaded Scarlet — a scientist of time and space — to give up her time-travel experiments and help with the project instead.
  • Progress (Sessions 35–37). Scarlet researched dimensional magic in the party's van, the Zoomfall, making basketball-sized glass spheres of interdimensional energy with Silas's help (Session 35). In the month after High Forge's liberation, Elspeth, Bru and Scarlet brought the Stellaro to about half finished (Session 37).
  • Reality stones (Session 38). Scarlet needed reality stones to stabilize the village's internal space. The party took about 500 pounds of them from an Eldoran machine dismantling the Goliath village on Grimvar's Spine.
  • The catalytic chamber (Sessions 44–45). At Fluke's Workshop, Scarlet ran the first successful trial in Iro's catalytic chamber (Session 44). Overnight the prototype began generating hills, streams and weather on its own. Using measuring instruments borrowed from Victor's lab, Scarlet tuned it until wooden roots grew out of a spinning blue void and formed a heavy hardwood door. She invited Bru and Elspeth to do the honors, and Elspeth stepped through first (Session 45).

Inside

The village responds to what each visitor imagines. When the party first entered, Elspeth pictured a small hamlet around a village green; Bru turned it scrappy and neon, with aluminum walls; Olivia added a beach with a surf shack; Silas a fountain spouting gold coins and a glowing door like the Lotus Casino's portal; and Leliana a spring festival with blooming trees and a campfire. The sky is unsettlingly close, like a painted ceiling (Session 45).

The Lotus door is a working passage. Naomi came through it for Silas's surprise birthday party (Session 45), Elspeth ran through it to fetch a suit (Session 47), and Silas used it to buy Marvin's memory-wiping brew at the Lotus (Session 55).

The Void Attack and Luna (Session 46)

Silas's birthday party was interrupted by void beings tearing through the close sky. They said they smelled "the warden" on Silas. The villagers' singing of "This Little Light of Mine" raised moonlight that burned them; one swallowed Olivia into the space between dimensions until Bru's force ballista destroyed it. Afterward a barrier formed between the village and the void — "our own moon base," in Silas's words — while Scarlet, monitoring from outside, found the space had stabilized.

Through a sending stone, Luna then manifested in the village by its lake. Silas worked out that the village sits in the tissue connecting the planes, which lets a deity's essence be reached there in a way the material world does not. Luna can be found and can speak in the village, but she told the party she cannot grow stronger there, and warned against Olivia's idea of settling a commune of her followers inside: "This place is not your real world."

The Capsule and Later Use

  • Capsule (Session 47). Scarlet locks the door with a key and the village folds down into a capsule she pockets. In Lady Viper's sitting room, Scarlet unfolded it and Elspeth led Lady Viper inside, where Luna appeared on a couch in a glade; Lady Viper agreed a congregation anchored there could be an asset.
  • Storage. The party kept its Bugatti in the village (Session 48) and stored the four crates of violescence stolen from Denlin's orphanage there (Session 50). Before entering the Eldoran Empire it stowed its own cars inside for a fast exit, and got the capsule, disguised, past an Eldoran checkpoint (Session 54).
  • The Eldoran chain-portal (Session 52). Eldoran knights at Luna Trench built a portal tuned to Luna wherever she was. Looking through it, Silas saw the inside of the pocket village, where Luna was then residing; the party cut the chain rather than destroy the portal, keeping the village's link intact.
