Captain Steel

Eldoran Officer • Half-Machine • Murderer of Lieutenant Steven Goldspring

Overview​

Captain Steel is an officer of the Eldoran Empire. He is gaunt and androgynous-looking, with a robotic arm and half a robotic skull, and he is referred to as "he". He murdered Leliana's brother, Lieutenant Steven Goldspring, to take Steven's research, and Leliana relived the murder in her memories in Session 57. He is based at the university research tower in the Eldoran capital. In Session 63 he was at the spaceport factory when its furnace-sun was stolen; he arrived too late and chased Bru, who escaped. He is still alive and at large, and Leliana has sworn to kill him.

His rank is Captain; the DM confirmed it in Session 62. Players sometimes say "Commander", but that is wrong. He is not the head scientist of the research tower, and the head scientist's wife is not his wife.

The Murder of Steven Goldspring​

In Session 57 Leliana walked back through her memories:

  • In a sterile white lab, Steven, now Lieutenant Goldspring, refused to hand his research to Steel: "Sir, Captain Steel, sir, I cannot share my research due to the extreme risk to human society." Steven said the "harmonic alignment" would produce too much power to ever contain, and he had asked to destroy it.
  • Steel drove his robotic hand into Steven's skull and ripped out his brain. When Leliana's memory-self cast frostbite at him, he counterspelled it and tore out her heart. She took 14 psychic damage in the present.
  • Elspeth pulled Steven's schematics from the lab's mainframe. They showed that the Eldoran "moon laser" was built on Steven's fission-power research, turned from containing uncontainable energy to directing it.
  • At the military cemetery Steel read Steven's will, which left the Blue Moon guitar to Leliana.

In the Eldoran Capital​

  • A target (Session 58): George listed the research center at the university as one of the Twilight Company's three sabotage targets and named Captain Steel as one of the most important targets there, since he resides at it. Leliana vowed to kill him.
  • At the factory (Session 60): From a catwalk, Elspeth saw him talking with an administrator beside a corner office off an exit throughway. He patted the man on the back and left.
  • His colleagues (Session 61): The party learned that one of the head scientists working with Steel joins the factory workers' events, because the scientist's wife is close with them.
  • Helisanna mode (Session 62): Silas privately told Leliana, "If you see an opportunity... kill his ass, I got your back." She answered, "I'll put on Helisanna mode." Leliana's Helisanna persona carries the vendetta.

Abilities​

  • Mechanical body: A robotic arm strong enough to tear through a skull (Session 57) and to wrench a furnace door open one-handed (Session 63).
  • Spellcasting: He counterspelled Leliana's frostbite in her memory (Session 57).
  • Flight: He flies and hovers (Session 63).

Session History​

  • Session 57 — In Leliana's memories he murders Lieutenant Steven Goldspring over research that became the Eldoran moon laser, tears out Leliana's memory-heart, and later reads Steven's will at the funeral.
  • Session 58 — George names him as one of the most important targets at the university research center where he resides, and Leliana vows to kill him.
  • Session 60 — Elspeth sees him on the spaceport factory floor, talking with an administrator by a corner office before he leaves through an exit.
  • Session 61 — The party learns that a head scientist who works with him has a wife close to the factory workers, which opens a way into the research tower.
  • Session 62 — Silas offers to back Leliana if she gets a chance to kill him, and she answers that she will "put on Helisanna mode."
  • Session 63 — While meeting a woman in the factory office, he sends away the workers reporting the missing furnace. He then berates a disguised Olivia, tears the furnace door open, and flies after Bru, who escapes with Misty Step.
