Lotus Casino

Magical Resort • Naomi's Workplace • Source of Marvin's brew

Overview

The Lotus Hotel and Casino is a flashy magical resort that sits in its own pocket of space rather than in any city. It offers gambling, a spa, shopping and stage shows. It is run by Marvin Jr. Jr. Jr., the nerdy great-grandson of its founder. Naomi, Silas's girlfriend, works there and lives there with her baby son Julius.

Status as of Session 63: operating normally. Since Session 45 the party can reach it through a door in the pocket village, which glows with the same light as the casino's portal. They last used that route in Session 55 to buy a bottle of Marvin's brew.

The Resort

  • Getting in: Visitors originally arrived through a portal that opens and closes every 24 hours (Interlude VII). A gold "Guest Transport" card can also teleport its holder straight to the lobby (Interlude XII).
  • Amenities: A casino, a spa with massages, mud baths and hot tubs, fancy clothes shops, concerts, and a magic show starring David Blaine and Fufu, the casino's performing owlbear. The lobby has a statue of Marvin's ancestor.
  • Marvin's brew: Marvin is knowledgeable about magic but hopeless at potions. His failed "recuperation" potion wiped the party's memory of their first night there (Interlude VII). Silas later bought a bottle to use as a weapon (Session 55).
  • The reset: Marvin's great-grandfather built a "factory reset" into the basement as a failsafe against takeovers. It sends every unauthorised guest back to where they teleported from, repairs the damage, and moves the casino in space and time so that no one can reach it for a while. It takes a key, and the key is guarded by a run of puzzle chambers (Interlude XII).

People

  • Marvin Jr. Jr. Jr.: The owner. Helisanna held him captive during her occupation (Interlude XII). The Session 35 recap calls him difficult to deal with.
  • Naomi: A muscular half-orc who worked in the spa when the party met her (Interlude VII). By Interlude XII she was in upper management and organised the staff against the occupation. She is a single mother to Julius, and she and Silas have been together since the party's first visit. He calls her every night on his sending stone (Session 40).
  • The staff: Spike Bison and his bodyguards Click and Clack, Carl from Maintenance (immune to Helisanna's thrall), Lily and Lana from the spa, and a British-voiced bartender (Interlude XII).

History

The Hangover (Interlude VII)

The fox-like being Toonlock treated the party to a stay at the Lotus, which the recap describes as a flashy but lower-budget version of his own realm. After a night on Marvin's accidental potion, they spent the next day piecing together what they had done: a baby in Olivia's room, an owlbear asleep in their jacuzzi, and a gnome tied up in a coffin. They also found that Silas had wooed Naomi. Marvin comped them a second night by way of apology.

Helisanna's Occupation (Interlude XII)

After Arc 2, Naomi wrote to Silas for help. Helisanna, who by then had her own body and was running with her ravers, had come to the Lotus for an audition and ended up occupying it. She turned it into a round-the-clock concert venue, trashed the lobby, built a halfpipe, kidnapped Marvin, and forced Fufu to do three shows a day. Using the guest card, the party teleported in disguised as ravers. They worked out that Marvin had entrusted the reset key to Fufu, solved the basement puzzles, and Silas pulled the lever. The ravers and Helisanna were sent back to High Forge and the casino repaired itself. It then vanished for a time, leaving Naomi and Julius cut off from Silas.

Earlier, in Session 35, the party had floated giving Helisanna a Lotus residency, hoping nightly shows would keep her and the ravers contented. The idea was never put into practice.

Through the Pocket Village

  • The door: When Silas stepped into the newly opened pocket village and thought of the Lotus, a coin fountain and a door glowing like the Lotus portal appeared. Naomi came through it with a birthday cake for him (Session 45), and she stayed the night during the void-being attack (Session 46).
  • A change of clothes: Elspeth ran through the pocket village to the Lotus to change into her pinstripe suit before meeting Lady Viper (Session 47).
  • Marvin's brew: During the Eldoran infiltration, Silas slipped through to the Lotus, bought a bottle of Marvin's brew, and left a necklace and a note on Naomi's desk. The party used the brew to knock out rival mercenary crews at breakfast before Lord Bradicus's contest (Session 55).
