Iron Maiden

Steamboat • Iro's, at Fluke's Workshop

Overview

The Iron Maiden is an old steamboat that belonged to Fluke of the Steve Squad. It is docked at Fluke's Workshop on the Greyport waterfront and kept by his son Iro. The party has borrowed it twice: to defend the workshop (Session 44) and to raid the Eldoran barges at Luna Trench (Session 52). It came back to the workshop in Session 53 and has not been mentioned since.

Properties

  • Appearance. It looks ancient, "more rust than metal", but Iro has devotedly scrubbed the prow so that the name still shows (Session 44). The Session 44 recap calls it 200 years old.
  • It wants to fight for its home. When Leliana took the wheel in Session 44, the guest DM described it as seeming "to shriek almost in delight" as it went out to sea, veering toward the attackers so readily that she barely had to touch the wheel. He called it "almost supernaturally intuitive" at defending the shop.
  • Famous. In Session 52 the DM called it notorious, even legendary, in its way, and the party judged it too recognisable for a covert job.
  • A bigger engine. In Session 52 Elspeth enlarged its engine without sinking the boat. Its speed tripled, to about 300 feet a turn.

History

Iro showed the party the boat on their first visit to the workshop, saying he had won a race on it with his family (Session 44). It was a clue, together with the workshop's name, that his father was Fluke of the Steve Squad. Later that session, attackers on three boats threw Molotov cocktails at the workshop. Leliana and Olivia took the Iron Maiden out, since Iro had left the keys in the ignition. Leliana worked out how to pilot it (Insight 27), and Olivia swatted the cocktails back down onto the attackers' boats.

In Session 52 the party sailed it to Luna Trench to break up the Eldoran operation there. To disguise it, Silas renamed one side Led Zeppelin and Elspeth renamed the other Dancing Queen, and Silas posed as a knight of the Order of St. George. Leliana held the helm through the fight, threading the boat through the wreckage around a black hole and crushing knights in the water. BoxBox mended a cannon hit to the hull with lightning, and Elspeth enlarged the engine.

The party sailed it back into the workshop the same afternoon, the ship mostly unscathed (Session 53). Leliana's birthday gift to Scarlet that day was a string necklace braided from boat material.

  • Iro: its keeper
  • Greyport: home port, at Fluke's Workshop
  • Luna: rescued at Luna Trench in Session 52

Session History

  • Session 44 — Iro shows the party his father's old steamboat. When boats attack the workshop, Leliana and Olivia take the Iron Maiden out, and the boat eagerly helps them drive the attackers off.
  • Session 52 — Disguised as Led Zeppelin and Dancing Queen, the Iron Maiden carries the party into the battle at Luna Trench. Leliana steers it, BoxBox repairs its hull, and Elspeth triples its speed.
  • Session 53 — The party sails it back into Iro's workshop the same afternoon, just in time for Scarlet's surprise birthday party.
