Raingoth
Artifact • Carried by Silas
Overview
Raingoth is the galaxy-filled glass sphere in which the first dwarven kings bound the void dragon Astro. Silas stole it with the Sisyphus Circle, and the party resealed Astro inside it at Luna's crash site in Session 41. Silas carries it, and he brought it with him into the Eldoran capital, where it is as of Session 63. It cannot enter the pocket village or the portable hole.
The name comes from the dwarves: the High Forge vault tablets write it "Rangoth" (Session 30), and the Order of St. George calls it "Rain Goth" (Session 39). It is one of several dragon orbs tied to Astro.
Properties
- Appearance: a black glass orb with a galaxy-like star pattern swirling inside (Interlude 13, Session 7).
- A link to Astro: touching it opens a psychic connection. Olivia heard it speak her name (Session 7). Silas felt a lasting connection when he first touched it (Interlude 13), and he has spoken with Astro through it (Sessions 24 and 47).
- Power over dragons: "They who hold Rangoth hold the sphere of the chain. All who carry dragon's blood must bow to its wielder" (the vault tablets, Session 30). The High Forge dragons followed whoever held the orb (Sessions 28 and 32).
- Hard to hide, hard to break: Bru's natural 20 on Arcana (Session 24) found that it would take 8th–9th level magic to make, that its glass is nearly unbreakable, that anyone who knows of it can scry on it, and that putting it in a bag of holding would tear a rift in reality. The party keeps it out of every extradimensional space: the bag of holding (Session 7), the pocket village (Session 46), and the portable hole (Silas, Session 47).
- Behaviour near Luna: at the crash site it pulled matter and energy toward itself like a small black hole, threw off blasts of energy near Luna's skeleton, and turned chaotic at the ritual altar (Session 41).
- Interference: it runs hot and disturbs dimensional instruments even inside a Faraday cage (Session 45). Void beings say they smell "the warden" on Silas (Session 46).
History
- The heist (Interlude 13): the Sisyphus Circle stole the orb for Helja Ungar. At the handoff a bag switch left Helja with a decoy medicine ball; she killed the rest of the crew, and Silas and Bru escaped through the storm drains with the orb.
- High Forge (Sessions 28–37): the party learned that the dragons obeyed whoever held the orb and that the Iron Claws had been deceiving them. Silas conned Helja with a fake orb (Sessions 36–37). Helja's journal later showed that her mother had pushed her to get it: "I must have the orb" (Session 38).
- The rebinding (Sessions 39–42): the Order of St. George wanted the orb rebound, and hoped to use the ritual to track the other orbs. The party completed the ritual with four violescent spheres, seven salt circles and a bowl of blood, and Silas spoke Astro's name; phantasmal chains closed around the orb. They secretly kept the tracking data, and Elspeth told the Order the orb had fallen into the ocean (Session 42).
- Talks with Astro (Sessions 46–47): with Luna, the party weighed sealing Astro further, releasing her, or negotiating. Silas communed with her in Session 47.
- The Empire's interest (Session 61): Eldoran research notes named the dragon orbs as a possible way to disrupt a runaway harmonic loop. The Empire believes it could control the dragons with them, but has not obtained any.
Who carries it
Silas carries it, and he brought it into the Eldoran capital. In Session 47 Silas said at the table that during his scheme against Helja (Sessions 36–37) he had slipped the orb into Bru's bag without telling him, and the Session 47 recap reports this as fact, but the sessions in between have it with Silas: in Session 41 Astro's voice comes from Silas's backpack, and in Session 45 the orb is in Silas's backpack, which he hands to Bru to test Victor's needle. In Session 47 Silas took the orb in hand ("I take the orb").
