Astro

Void Dragon • Imprisoned in the Dragon Orb • "The Dragon of Everything"

Overview

Astro is an ancient void dragon imprisoned by the first dwarven kings in a galaxy-filled glass sphere the dwarves call Raingoth (also written Rain Goth and Rangoth), the dragon orb that Silas stole in the Sisyphus Circle heist. The party resealed her in the rebinding ritual at Luna's crash site (Session 41). As of Session 63 she is still bound, and Silas carries the orb, which he brought into the Eldoran capital. Silas has begun talking with her in place of further binding (Session 47). She threatens revenge if she ever gets free, but for the first time asked how long the party would need. Other orbs tied to her are scattered across the world. The party holds their locations, and in Session 61 they learned that the Eldoran Empire wants those orbs too.

Her full name is never pronounced the same way twice. Silas keeps it written phonetically on his forearm.

Nature

  • Void dragon: The High Forge tablets (Session 30) call her "the sleeper in the stars, the serpent of the world, the god, the dragon of everything", captured by the first dwarven kings in "a knot in the thread of reality". Speaking through the orb in Session 24, she called herself "Everything".
  • Dragons' allegiance: Whoever holds Raingoth can command those "who carry dragon's blood" (Session 30). The dragons in High Forge served her and followed whoever held the orb (Sessions 28 and 32).
  • Predator of the void: Luna watched the dwarves imprison her centuries ago. In Session 46 the party worked out that her appetite kept void beings in check. With Astro imprisoned, those beings are loose in the dimensional tears.
  • Luna: Astro calls Luna "sister". At the crash site she promised to help her and told Silas, "I will not be stopped" (Session 41).
  • The orb: It is nearly unbreakable, and it tears reality if it is put in a bag of holding or a pocket dimension. For that reason it never enters the pocket village. Touching it opens a psychic link to her.

Relationships

  • Silas: Stole the orb, and has kept a psychic connection to it ever since he first touched it. He speaks her name in the rituals and is the only one to have negotiated with her. The void devils "smell the warden" on him (Session 46).
  • Bru: Analysed the orb (Sessions 24 and 41). In Session 47 Silas claimed he had once slipped it into Bru's bag without telling him, but Sessions 41–45 have the orb in Silas's own backpack, and Silas has held it since.
  • Olivia: The first party member to touch the orb. It spoke her name (Session 7).
  • Helja Ungar: Hired the Sisyphus Circle to steal the orb and hunted Silas for it for years. Her mother pushed her to get it.
  • Order of St. George: Dragon hunters who organised the rebinding ritual and tried to use it to track the other orbs. The party sabotaged their tracking.

Session History

  • Session 7 — Silas produces the galaxy-filled orb from his old crew's heist. Olivia touches it, sees a cosmic dragon-like being and hears it speak her name.
  • Session 24 — Silas communes with the entity, which calls itself "Everything" and wants a dimensional rift opened to reach the world. Bru's natural 20 shows the orb would tear reality in a bag of holding.
  • Session 30 — Tablets in the High Forge vault describe the dwarven kings binding the "dragon of everything" in Rangoth, the orb's power over dragon-blooded creatures, and the rebinding ritual.
  • Session 32 — The dragons Duncan and Betty learn the party holds the orb and turn on the Iron Claws. The party learns these dragons serve the imprisoned dragon.
  • Interlude 13 — In a flashback, the Sisyphus Circle steals the orb in Greyport. Silas touches it and feels a lasting connection, and a bag switch keeps it away from Helja.
  • Session 39 — Silas shows the orb to the Order of St. George, who name it Rain Goth, "the orb that holds Astro".
  • Session 40 — The Order plans the rebinding ritual and hopes to use it to track other orbs. Bafael prepares the violescent spheres and salt.
  • Session 41 — At Luna's crash site Astro speaks from Silas's backpack, promising to help her "sister". Silas speaks her name, and the party resists the psychic onslaught and reseals her, while Bru and Elspeth hijack the Order's orb-tracking data.
  • Session 42 — Elspeth tells the Order that the orb fell into the ocean. The party keeps the resealed orb and the tracking data, which is saved on a floppy disc.
  • Session 45 — The orb interferes with Victor's dimensional instruments through its Faraday cage and runs hot in Silas's pack.
  • Session 46 — Void beings say they smell "the warden" on Silas, and the party realises Astro's imprisonment let them run loose. Scarlet maps the other orbs, and the party weighs sealing Astro further against negotiating with her.
  • Session 47 — Silas communes with Astro. She vows revenge if freed, but after a persuasion roll of 26 she asks how long they would want: "a hundred years? A thousand years?" She warns him to work quickly, since others are talking to her.
  • Session 61 — Eldoran research notes show the Empire studying the dragon orbs as a way to break runaway harmonic resonance loops. The Empire believes it could control the dragons with the orbs but has not obtained any.
