Dwarf Detective • Olivia Superfan • Co-Leader of High Forge

Overview​

Chalk Rock is a 16-year-old dwarf detective in High Forge with an obsessive admiration for retired detective Olivia Cooper. He was recently hired when the party met him, working April Bonal's missing persons case. During the battle against the Iron Claws he led the civilian evacuation of the city. Since Helja's fall (Session 37) he has run High Forge alongside the "softening" Grimjaw, and by Session 38 Olivia's daily training had turned him buff and confident. He stayed in High Forge when the party left for Greyport and has not appeared in person since.

Personality​

  • Anxious but competent: Before Helja's fall he was socially awkward and better at planning than fieldwork. He wrote his speeches out in advance because, as he reminded himself, "you're not good outside this office."
  • Olivia superfan: He models himself on Olivia and talks through his plans with an imagined version of her.
  • Transformed: In Session 38 he strides into Bernardo's pizza shop chest-out and muscular, ordering pies "for the boys" at the police office. Olivia has been working with him daily.

Relationships​

  • Olivia: His idol. She is the one party member who likes him, calling him "very competent, just very awkward", and she put him in charge. She spent days after the battle teaching him how to run an orderly, democratic city and gave him a personal sending stone.
  • Elspeth: Openly dislikes him. She taught the teenagers to drive but refused to teach him, and she points out every new ding he puts in the F-150 to Olivia.
  • Silas: Finds him insufferable, and liked him even less once he started thriving.
  • Grimjaw: Former Iron Claws leader who now governs High Forge with him.
  • April Bonal: The subject of his missing persons case. After Session 37 her group agreed to work with him on distributing the looted vault gold.

Session History​

  • Session 32 — At the Little Hovel the party meets Detective Chalk Rock, who is investigating the disappearance of April Bonal and other missing people linked to the synthesis lab.
  • Session 33 — He leads the party to Rattie's Pie Land, where the trail runs into the sewers to April's encampment.
  • Session 35 — Sneaking through the old precinct for a map, the party finds his elaborate battle display, with figurines of the party around a table and an empty chair at its head. They overhear him planning to get civilians out of the city with the help of the old community leaders.
  • Session 36 — He wakes the party with news that the Iron Claws have taken hostages in the Great Hall.
  • Session 37 — He leads hundreds of civilians out of High Forge, then takes charge of the city with Grimjaw. Olivia coaches him on governing, the F-150 becomes his government vehicle, and April's group agrees to work with him on the vault gold.
  • Session 38 — Weeks later, he is buff and confident after daily training with Olivia, running the city smoothly with Grimjaw. The F-150 stays with him when the party leaves for Greyport.
