Roscoe

Warforged • Milstrom Local • Keeper of the Pilgrim Tunnels

Overview​

Roscoe is a bizarre old warforged in Milstrom. He is an eccentric alcoholic who runs on a makeshift digestive system he got through wish magic. He knew the hidden tunnels pilgrims of Tyr once used to get around the town. He gave Red the journal that revealed Red's true identity, and he guided the party onto the Pilgrim's Path toward Grimvar's Spine. His last confirmed appearance was over drinks at the Milstrom Inn in Session 23, and his whereabouts as of Session 63 are unknown.

In Milstrom​

The party met Roscoe in Session 10, while the town was in the grip of Red Lennon's Milstrom Party. He wanted beer for his knowledge, a lot of it, so the party stole a keg from the tavern during a public show trial. In return he showed them a hidden trapdoor into the tunnels beneath Milstrom, drew a drunken but readable map to the corrupted shrine, and told them about the dissenter Willemay. He also pointed them to the tunnels that George had passed through on his pilgrimage, and urged them to act fast.

In Session 11, he led the party through the tunnels to a meadery and dining hall and offered to share "all of his secrets" if everyone drank his homemade Everclear ("Roscoe's Everclear: You Only Live Once"). He also sent Red a telepathic message, "Do you trust your compatriots?", and enjoyed misleading the party about who had sent it. Once Red drank, Roscoe gave him a journal that had belonged to his mother, Marion Cross. It revealed that Red was adopted, that his real name is Thurnok Skyhammer, a Goliath prince of the Skyhammer Clan, and that the Twilight Company had placed the Crosses in hiding to protect him from the Eldoran Empire. When wolves attacked the town, he warned the party.

Roscoe's tip about the Crosses' deaths started the investigation that led to Zeke in Session 13. At the end of that session, he set out with the party as their guide on the Pilgrim's Path.

Personality​

Roscoe mixes cryptic wisdom and drunken philosophizing with unsettling honesty ("I am a liar. And I can also be a hypocrite."). He is fiercely protective of the purity of his liquor and objected loudly when Bru tried to make his Everclear "brown" with dirt. The Session 11 recap notes the party's suspicion that he may be a Peaceforged soldier, once part of a psychic hive mind led by a being called SHIELD. This has not been confirmed.

Later Appearances​

  • In Session 18, Jasper Gaines was introduced as a friend of Roscoe's, delivering beer to the tavern. During the corrupted solstice, Roscoe's alcohol was replaced with bangers and mash.
  • In Session 23, after the memorial, Roscoe joined the party for drinks at the Milstrom Inn and sang "Piano Man".
  • The Session 36 recap lists a "Rosco" among the hostages the Iron Claws held in High Forge's Great Hall, and the Session 37 recap spells the name "Roscoe". Both say he survived. Neither recap says whether this is the Milstrom warforged, and no Session 36 transcript exists to check.

Session History​

  • Session 10 — Meets the party in Milstrom and trades a stolen keg for the pilgrim tunnels, a map to the corrupted shrine, and news of the town's dissenters.
  • Session 11 — Makes the party drink his Everclear, then gives Red his mother Marion Cross's journal, revealing that Red is Thurnok Skyhammer.
  • Session 13 — His tip about the Crosses' deaths leads the party to Magnolia and Zeke, and he guides them onto the Pilgrim's Path.
  • Session 18 — Jasper arrives as his friend; the corrupted solstice replaces his alcohol with bangers and mash.
  • Session 23 — Drinks with the party at the Milstrom Inn after the memorial, singing "Piano Man".
