Elder Ragar

Goliath Elder • Leader of the Skyhammer Clan

Overview

Ragar is the ancient goliath elder who leads the Skyhammer Clan at the summit of Grimvar's Spine. In Session 17 he recognised Red as Thurnok Skyhammer, the clan's lost prince, and sent him into the trials of the Worms Tunnel to unlock how the Skyhammer bloodline powers the clan's starship. When the ship had to launch under Eldoran attack (Session 22), the clan's Elder urged Red into the chamber that permanently merged him with it. The party left the goliaths behind in disgust, and Bru stabbed the Elder on the way out. When the party returned to the mountain peak in Session 38, the village was being dismantled and held only two Eldoran soldiers. Ragar has not been seen since.

Role in the Story

  • Recognising Red: Red's tattoo matched the clan's artistic style, and his birth name confirmed who he was. News that his adoptive parents, Marion and Robert Cross, had been murdered saddened the clan, which had lost contact with them.
  • The bloodline and the ship: Only the Skyhammer bloodline can power the clan's spacecraft, and the knowledge of how had been lost. Ragar told Red that the trials in the Worms Tunnel, a passage carved by an ancient serpent, would either unlock that knowledge or kill him. Only the main bloodline survives them.
  • Rewards: He told Silas the clan would compensate the party for bringing back its prince.
  • Red's sacrifice: During the Eldoran attack, the clan's Elder called Red into the ship's humanoid chamber as "his destiny" and called the result a heroic sacrifice. The party saw it as manipulation: Red had not been told what would happen and could not be removed from the ship. Bru stabbed the Elder in the gut and told him, "You have made an enemy of all goblins." The recap calls him only "the Elder".

Session History

  • Session 17 — The party reaches the Skyhammer village. Ragar recognises Red as Thurnok Skyhammer, explains that the bloodline must power the starship, and leads the party to the Worms Tunnel for Red's trials.
  • Session 22 — As an Eldoran avalanche bears down, the Elder calls Red into the ship's chamber and Red merges permanently with the starship. Bru stabs the Elder, and the party refuses to leave with the clan.
